Inside the Sea 2 Sky Chair: Designing Outdoor Furniture for the West Coast

Outdoor furniture in the Pacific Northwest has to survive a specific kind of abuse: months of rain, intense UV in the summer, salt air near the coast, and temperature swings that most materials don't love. The Adirondack chair became the default answer to that problem decades ago, largely because cedar and painted wood could handle it, then came cheap injection molded version and plank-style assemblies. No one has broken the mold until now! The Sea 2 Sky Chair was designed to be the West Coast's next answer.
Starting from the material, not the shape
Most furniture design starts with a sketch. This one started with a question: what material could actually survive being left outside on a Squamish deck year-round, be easily recycled, and could we source it locally? That led us to a custom PETG-GF composite, glass-fiber reinforced PETG, sourced from our supplier in Victoria, BC. Glass fiber reinforcement gives the material the stiffness and impact resistance a chair needs, while added custom chemistry makes it UV-stable and water-resistant without needing an additional, paint, coating or sealant that requires repair.
Once the material was locked in, the form could follow. Large format 3D printing let us build a single-piece, continuous shell rather than the joined boards of a traditional Adirondack or Muskoka Chair, which is where the chair's clean, architectural silhouette comes from. Ergonomically formed, not made from flat planks, it doesn’t even need a cushion. The top comment we get when someone sits down, “Wow, I didn’t know it was going to be so comfortable!”.
Why the printed texture isn't a flaw
Look closely at the Sea 2 Sky Chair and you'll see a subtle, rhythmic ridge pattern across the surface, a natural result of the large format printing process. We designed around it rather than trying to sand it away. That texture does double duty: it adds visual depth that changes with the light throughout the day, and it's a visible signal that the piece was made, not molded, one at a time.
The engineering behind the comfort
A chair that looks sculptural still has to be comfortable for a long afternoon outside. The S2S balances a minimalist profile with ergonomic seat and back angles, and it's offered with or without armrests depending on how it needs to fit a space. Fully assembled, the armrest version weighs 62 lbs, enough mass to stay put in coastal wind without feeling like it's built from a lightweight, disposable material.
Built one at a time, not stockpiled
Every Sea 2 Sky Chair is printed to order in our Squamish studio, typically a 2 to 3 week turnaround. There's no warehouse of pre-made inventory sitting around waiting for a buyer, which keeps material waste down and means every chair that ships was made because someone specifically wanted it.
